Passion Without Sex!

How passionate are you about what you do? Can you describe what you do in a way that would excite me and want to become a client of yours?

I was writing a piece on the characteristics of entrepreneurs, which if you are interested, you can find by clicking here, when I sidetracked myself by thinking about passion versus motivation.

There’s a whole industry based on motivation techniques and most of us can trot out Maslow’s hierarchy of needs etc but there’s something missing!  There’s a huge difference between being motivated and being passionate about something.

For example, I am motivated once a year to fill in my tax return – but I’m not passionate about it!

And it struck me; unless you are passionate about what you do, don’t ever become self-employed! Carolyn at Lifestyle Online gets clients because she is passionate about what she does and it comes over in her whole approach.

And the passion can be expressed in different ways; it may be in an over-the-top, bubbly exuberance. But a quiet intensity can convey passion too, as can anything in between those extremes. The important thing is to be yourself! Don’t be all rah rah if you are naturally more reserved.

However it is expressed, if you do not convey passion about what you do, how can your clients be motivated enough to buy from you?

But this is not the preserve of the self-employed; I challenge people on workshops I run in organisations: are you passionate about what you do? If not, why are you doing it? Life’s too short to stay stuck in a job you’re not passionate about and ‘job security’ is no longer a valid reason (if it ever was). The current economic situation has taught many people that job security no longer exists.
